Boys soccer team wins game against FZN in first district game

Senior Justin Stinson strikes the ball into the offensive half. Stinson has been on the varsity soccer team for four years.

While many fall sports are winding down, boys soccer has been taking off. On Monday, Oct. 27, the team started its districts tournament with a big 3-0 win against Fort Zumwalt North. According to senior Walter Lembeck, the team had a strong start, but could not seem to get the ball in the net right away.

“They had really good control and position and passed the ball really well. I didn’t expect them to go through the first half without scoring because they were dominating the game and really taking it to them,” Lembeck said.

The team did not go scoreless for long, however. Junior Kyle Setchfield got the ball rolling when he scored the first two goals. The third goal, scored by junior Coleton Brown, sealed the win for the team.

“It was extremely important because we just wanted to show that we couldn’t just beat a team 1-0, but more than 1-0 and that we can score on all our opportunities.  It just kind of scares our other opponents,” Brown said.

A lead separated by 3 goals is great, but a shutout is even more intimidating when it comes to a soccer game. Senior goalkeeper, Chase Webert, found the shutout against Zumwalt to be a personal achievement.

“ For me, personally, I think it’s a really good accomplishment because it means every shot I faced didn’t go in, and it’s really good for stats,” Webert said.

The team faces Francis Howell High today at six at Fort Zumwalt West. If the team wins this match, they will take the district title and go on to sectionals.
