Soccer team dominates Wolves
Two goals in first half give Spartans comfortable victory against area foe
Spartan Nation was truly, “going up on a Tuesday,” as the boys soccer team hosted and defeated the Timberland Wolves on Aug. 15. The stands were filled with hooting and cheering fans.
Within the first three minutes of the game, sophomore Caleb Mundle scored the first goal of the night.
“It was good to get some momentum going for the team,” Mundle says, “It definitely helped set the tone for the rest of the game.”
Within 10 minutes of Mundle’s goal, junior CJ Brown scored the second goal of the first half. As the Wolves attempt to score, junior goalie Nathan Smith made an impressive save. The ending score of the first half was 2-0.
At the start of the second half, senior Kyle Setchfield scored the third goal of the night. At this point, the Wolves had yet to score.
Five minutes after Setchfield’’s goal, CJ Brown scored his second goal, leaving 32 minutes left on the clock.
According to Coach Nicholas Beckmann, the team was performing quite well, as Central was up four to nothing.
“Anytime you are able to rest your starters, or the guys playing significant minutes, and we had them out of there with 25 minutes left, it’s a good sign,” Beckmann said.
The Wolves managed to score with 24 minutes left on the clock, making it the last goal of the night. The final score was 4-1, tallying another victory for the Spartans. CJ Brown was very pleased with the game’s outcome.
“I think we performed well. We came out and got the W (win) so that’s always good,” Brown said.
After the win against Timberland, the boy’s soccer team is 5-3 for the season. On wednesday Sept. 23, the team will host the St. Dominic Crusaders at 7 p.m.
