Boys’ Swim Team claims victory
Boys’ Swim Team wins in close match against Howell
The boys’ swim team pulled out a close victory against Francis Howell on September 6th with a 98-85 win.Chris Bissett, a sophomore, thinks that the very fact that they were swimming against our school rivals helped the team pull out a win.
“Swimming against Howell motivates us to push harder at practices, and the thought of swimming against them helps share our team throughout the season,” Bissett said, “Also, we know and are friends with most of the guys on the Howell team, so it always feels good to one-up them.”
Senior Cameron Zalmanoff agrees with Bissett in that the rivalry between the teams helped push the team into the win.
“Because we are swimming against our rivals, it increases our teams drive to beat out opponents. We feel more excited to work together and defend against our biggest rival,” Zalmanoff said.
Michael Yu, a junior, attributes this win to the help of his teammates who know that he has trouble swimming under pressure.
“I feel that I generally perform worse under pressure,” said Michael. This makes swimming in important meets such as the one against Howell difficult; however, Yu knows that his team is what helps him overcome the pressure he feels,
“the team as a whole takes some pressure off of me. It helps when people are in light-hearted moods and wish me luck.”
Speaking of pressure, this match was an especially close one with Howell leading at the halftime.
“Coming into the Howell meet we knew it was going to be close, and to be honest we weren’t terribly surprised that we were down at halfway. But being down was kind of a wake up call which pushed us in the second half of the meet,” said Bissett.
Cameron agreed that being behind at halftime helped the team pull together and swim even harder in order to defeat Howell.
“Since the meet was so close the whole time, there was a lot of tension and it was definitely a nail-biting experience the whole way.” says Cameron, “It made me want to put forth all of my effort and swim faster than ever to defeat Howell. I saw this as an exciting challenge that wasn’t all just pressure to win but as an experience for our team to work together to beat our largest rival.”
