The atmosphere was exciting. It was finally the annual football senior night. The final home football game for the class of 2015 had arrived after four short years. The senior night activities kicked off this event, and soon the game was about to begin.

The game was to be played against Francis Howell. The oldest of our two sister schools, and the most successful of the three. The Vikings came in as the 5th ranked school in the state and 161st in the nation.

At the opening kick, both student sections were certainly excited for this game, both wanting to prove their superiority to the other. However, on the field, it was soon the Vikings who reigned superior.

The Vikings’ first two drives were scores and it wasn’t until an interception by senior cornerback Zachary McKinley, that the Vikings were finally stopped.

It looked, for a few seconds, that there was a sliver of hope for the football team, as McKinley had seemingly caught a touchdown pass. However, this hope was soon crushed by a small yellow flag for holding that negated the touchdown, and led to Howell taking possession.

The second quarter was no different, with the Vikings scoring three more touchdowns to take a 35-0 lead at half.

The second half was kicked off and the Vikings again dominated the field. The final score was 49-6, with the football team losing to Howell, making the football team 0-2 against its sister schools.

Part of the heartbreak caused by that game revolved around senior night. It was the senior football players’ final game on their home field and, to senior Ben Orlet, that was a bitter moment.

“When you leave that field, all your memories start coming back. It hits you really fast that you’re never gonna play on that field again,” said Orlet

With Coach Jim Greco being suspended because of his ejection against Fort Zumwalt West, and interim head coach Donald Lober not beginning his tenure until next week, the head coach confusion caused problems for the football team, according to junior Jordan Cooper.

“It created a big distraction. When we were practicing we weren’t focused on the drill, we were wondering who our coach would be. It’s hard to focus with that much going on,” said Cooper.

As the final two weeks of the season are coming quickly, the football team is lead by Coach Lober. The former freshman and J.V coach said he’s found a silver lining to the unfortunate circumstances in which he took the helm.

“I’m excited to coach the sophomores and juniors that I worked with as the J.V coach. But it’s a silver lining to the unfortunate circumstances that I’ve started coaching,” said Lober.

The football team will take on the wolves of Timberland at Timberland this Friday night at 7 o’clock.
