The Spartan softball team took on the Troy Softball tournament over the weekend of Aug. 20-21, coming out a little short of a fifth place finish.  Winning twice, but falling twice as well. The Spartans see room for improvement as the rest of their season looms.

In their first matchup against Lafayette, the Spartans fared well.  Achieving a 6-3 win over the Lancers, Francis Howell Central opened up the season on as good a note as a softball team would hope for.  However, the good feels didn’t last long as they dropped their second game to Hickman 3-2.

The fourth place game was the best they could play for.  The first team, Palmyra, took the lead early and looked like the sure victors, however, FHC had an answer.  Coming back, the Spartans scored five runs on top of a home run by Erica Hixson.   

“I just kind of saw the pitch and then swung and then it went over the fence,”Hixson said,   

The Spartans were then given the opportunity to take 4th place overall in the tournament.  Senior Meghan Schaefer was proud of how the team had played

“We were really excited after the comeback, I mean we thought we were doing well at that point.” Schaefer said.

That opportunity, however, had been skewed when the team took a 6-1 loss in their final game against Hillsboro.

Although not the result they wanted, the girls have the rest of the season to look forward to as they hope to improve their results.  

“We really didn’t get the result we wanted.  It was really disappointing to go out the way we did,”Hixson said.   
The team’s next game is on Thursday Aug. 25 at home.
