A shocking 9-5 upset defeat against Fort Zumwalt North marked the end of the season for the players of the varsity baseball team last Monday, the 15th of May. The class five, district seven game was meant to be another win on the road to the state championships, but was thwarted by several critical errors that allowed FZN to score numerous runs.

For seniors Kaleb Cissell, pitcher/catcher, and Mitchell Hantack, third baseman, it was a crushing loss to a bright season.

“We were up in the beginning of the game – we were up two-nothing for [three] innings, but then in the fourth they scored six runs because of errors we were making,” Hantack said. “They scored six that inning, and then ended up beating us.”

“The first ball [that inning] was hit to our second baseman, and he made an error. We started letting hits in, and it just went downhill from there,” Cissell added.

Not all was unwell; however, the team still ran a 15-12-1 record through their season, and put up a Greater Athletic Conference championship win. Still, the varsity team’s loss at districts was an unexpected time for the season to come to a close.

“It’s hard.” Cissell said. “We all thought we should’ve been in the championship, and it just sucked that we didn’t play how we should have yesterday.”

Hantack felt the same.

“We hit the ball hard yesterday. It’s just that we hit it right at them,” he said. “We did a lot better than last year, but it’s still not how we wanted it to end, especially as seniors. It’s alright though. We still have bright futures ahead of us, and it made us better people.”
