As the girls basketball team continues to dominate the GAC South, the mentality of the team becomes more and more important.

The Spartans, sitting at a cool 11-2 record this season, have won many games against top teams, and have kept their mental cool as well.

Mackenzie Jones, junior, knows the mentality of the team to be essential to their growth and development.

“Include everyone, treat everyone like they’re your family, and just set a good example by your actions,” Jones said.

The success the Spartans have been having is largely affected by the positive mentality and close bonds that the team has with one another. This mentality sets them up for success, and has worked so far this season, as the Spartans are ranked #9 in the state.

“A team first mentality, it’s not about you, it’s about your teammates and having fun in a competitive way” Jones said.

The team first mentality has contributed to their impressive season so far, and overall improves the morale of the team as a whole, according to senior Yani Curry.

Curry believes that the team’s mindset is very positive, and has affected the team’s early season performance to date.

“A culture with a ‘pound the rock’ mindset and a culture of family knowing everything we do ties back to the family we’ve built as a program,” Curry said.

The “pound the rock” mentality is the idea of never quitting, and continuing to persevere when losing or winning.

“We focus on having a hard work ethic and putting forth our best effort in everything,” Curry emphasized.

The hard work ethic comes from their “pound the rock” mentality, and they will continue to work hard to achieve their goals.

Sophomore, Lindsay Mason, understands the ethic that has to come with playing on the Spartans girls team.

“We have a lot of girls coming up from JV, so we have to practice harder with them,” Mason said.
