Varsity girls basketball fights for the final time

The FHC Varsity Girls Basketball team faces a devastating defeat at districts on 3/1 to end their season.

On the night of March 1st, Francis Howell Central hosted the Varsity Girls Basketball District Championship game with our very own Spartans facing off against Hazelwood Central. It was a competitive and exciting game, unfortunately ending in a loss for our girls as Hazelwood beat them 62-47.

One of our beloved seniors, Yani Curry, took a hit early in the game, tearing her achilles tendon. We hope for her speedy recovery before she joins the basketball team at the University of Toledo.

As the JV team’s head coach and Varsity assistant, Shakara Jones, likes to say, “You never lose, you only learn.” While the end to their season came upon the team quicker than expected and with an upsetting defeat, the program and their coaches recognize that you can’t always win, but you can reflect on your losses and learn from mistakes in order to improve your game.

This loss may have been the end for the 2018-2019 season, however the girls basketball program and head coach, Hayley Leake, are ready to start training for next year’s season. Spring workouts will begin soon and the team is already preparing for their summer camps. Watch out for next year’s team as they rise to the top once again.
