Walking into room 117 my senior year, brought me right back to the August afternoon in which I’d first crossed paths with Ms. Lisa Niswonger. I recalled the pit in my stomach that day, the sporadic rhythm of my heartbeat, and the shaky voice in which I first introduced myself. That same anxiety that’d rattled me three years prior, that had kept me quiet in my seat, was nowhere to be seen. My chest remains calm, my words come out smoothly, and I walk with confidence to the front of the room.
Tutoring for Honors American History has given me the opportunity to experience my favorite subject from a completely new perspective. Instructing students has furthered my understanding of history, whilst rekindling a passion for the discipline. Explaining the complexities of various historical events has forced me to question the preconceived notions I’ve held for years. What biases do I hold? What events go conveniently ignored? Why does this apply to one historical figure and not another? These thoughts have continued to perplex me. Up until now, I’d never stopped to question the accuracy of my assertions, or the motives behind my views. This newly applied pressure stemmed from an internal desire to avoid misleading others. To allow everyone to draw their own conclusions. This important realization has encouraged me to think critically and conduct adequate research before drawing conclusions.
Instructing students has provided me with an early glimpse into the world of education. Things certainly felt strange at first. Instead of just completing work for my teacher, I’ve begun to work alongside her. This dynamic has made it easier for me to imagine a future in education and academics. Nothing demonstrates the love of a subject more than going out of your way to spread that passion among others and create conversations among those previously unaware. The importance of spreading knowledge is undoubtedly important, and doing so can be rewarding for everyone involved.
A+ tutoring offers an in-school experience unlike any other. I’d recommend giving it a go to any student looking to further their knowledge in any particular course. Taking something you’re passionate about is one thing, teaching it allows you to see it in an entirely different light. Tutoring has fundamentally changed the trajectory of my academic career, and I highly encourage those considering it to follow their passions and experience something truly unique.
