Six Ways to Prepare for Finals

Use School Resources

In case you didn't know, around the Guidance Counselor's office, there's multiple therapy animals free to pet during certain times of the day, in case you ever feel stressed! They are also available from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. at Cram Central, a studying event held in the Learning Commons occuring both Jan. 8 and 9, right before finals begin. Multiple teachers from different subjects are free to talk to about any concerns, and there's also multiple fun activities to do during it. This includes snacks for purchase and little coloring sheets to distress your mind.

Mentally Check Yourself

Secondly, If you don’t feel good, then you won’t do good while studying. Along with physically feeling bad, such as not taking showers, or still being in your daily clothes. You can solve this by simply putting on comfortable clothes, lighting a candle, studying in cozy lights, or taking a moment to relax in a comfortable environment. That way, you’ll be able to enter a positive mindset faster, and will keep your head in the game by studying consistently.

Go over any Notes that you may have

At first, you’re gonna want to just read over it, and you might not remember it instantly. However, what you could do is write down what you remember from your class, and then review the stuff you don’t remember. There's multiple things you can do to help for memorization, examples being resources such as flashcards, quizziz, quizlet, etc. You could also review your own notes, and highlight the most important information. Don't worry about stuff you know won't be on the final; using your review guide provided by your teacher can help you with this.

Always take Breaks

You don’t want to over stress yourself, because then you'll end up in stopping entirely. To solve this, set time periods of when you’re studying, and how long you’ll take a break from said studying; during your break, consider drinking something or eating something so you don't end up feeling tired or malnourished. Using an alarm/timer can help remind you when you need to go back to studying!

Don't Procrastinate

Although it may be tempting, you should never wait until the last second to study for finals. Finals is the entire semester cramped into one test, AKA, over 3 months. This means that you need to memorize everything by using studying tactics that work for you (whether or not that’s taking organized notes, online quizzes, or reviewing flashcards) instead of deciding you’re going to wait because you don’t feel like doing it. You can do this by dedicating around an hour a day for each subject, or until you feel confident enough for the test. Another way to avoid procrastination at any means necessary is turning on alarms for certain times after school, or even during your own free time. You can label them so you know why the alarm is there, and make sure you don't turn them off due to temptation.

Ask your Teachers/Friends for Help

And finally, if you have any questions whatsoever involving studying, don’t wait around!! It may seem terrifying to ask someone for help, but you should never hold off on it, especially if it's involving finals. Because the moment you enter the test, you’ll be completely clueless, and then you’ll stress out, and finally you’ll give up and guess like there's no tomorrow. This situation isn’t ideal, and your teacher’s job is to help you– it’s why they’re there!! So don’t be scared, and always reach out to a teacher if you’re confused. And if you’re too afraid to ask a teacher, a friend who might know what they’re doing will always help you out.
