On Feb 28, the Francis Howell Vikings took down the Spartans, 59-56. The loss came on senior night for the Spartans and kept them winless since Feb 2. Senior guard A.J. Anderson led the team in scoring with 22 points, however it wasn’t enough to overcome the now 19-6 Vikings, who won by three points.

“It was really hard losing that close, especially to Howell and especially on senior night,” senior Tony Wyatt said. “I think we will learn from it and play that much harder next time.”

With the nine-game losing streak, the team needs to turn things around fast as they are heading into win or go home mode in the district playoffs.

Senior Dominic Horace is confident that the team can turn their luck around and make a run for the state title.

“It’s hard losing nine games in a row, but it’s even harder knowing that all of them were by less than 10 points. On the bright side, that shows that we stay in games ‘till the end, which means our problems seem to be our fourth quarter conditioning,” Horace said. “We will continue to practice hard and that should be what it takes to overcome our ‘curse.’”

Senior Abe Gonzalez, on the other hand, found the losing streak to be more of bad luck than anything else.

“So we apparently have this curse, and you know what? I think we did,” Gonzalez said jokingly. “It’s over now, and I have no doubts about our practicing, effort, and skills. We can compete with anyone, anywhere, anytime. I think that we’ll go far.”

It seems that both Gonzalez and Horace were on to something, as the team did snap the losing streak last night with a 69-59 victory over Howell North.

Already, the Spartans will have a chance to redeem themselves as their next opponents are the Howell Vikings. That game will be played tonight at 7:00 p.m.
