Technology is a huge part of school life. Students rely on technology to complete and turn in assignments more often than not, and teachers use Smart Boards and computers to present and teach assignments. So imagine finishing an assignment with a minute left of class and you get the loading message, the bell rings, and now you worry about how you are going to get this assignment turned in on time. Adding to the already stressful day of a student.
Dallas Bourisaw has to deal with this problem of slow technology whether that be because the internet doesn’t have a strong connection or because the Chromebooks that he is using are just old. Bourisaw mentions how this problem of slow technology affects him.
“It hurts my learning because it makes it difficult to get to websites like Canvas. When it won’t load it makes it difficult to get your assignments done on time,” Bourisaw said.
This struggle of getting assignments turned in on time is a big issue as it can affect the rest of your day whether that be via stress or just the fear that this will carry over into other classes. Bastian Hart mentioned how it takes away from his focus.
“Most of the time the slow technology negatively impacts me because I’m no longer focused on my classes, instead I’m worried about making sure I get these assignments turned in,” Hart said.
This problem can cause students’ to wonder if this issue is going to last throughout their day.
“When I have a class early on with difficulties when it comes to technology it gets me a little nervous for the rest of my classes, like whether or not I’ll have this issue from class to class,” Bourisaw said
It’s safe to say this issue is only adding to the stress and worrying of students. This issue doesn’t just affect students it can also affect the teachers as well. Madame Amy Roznos deals with the teacher’s end of the stress.
“I teach four different classes so sometimes I forget to publish an assignment and students will ask where it is and I have to rush to publish it and it’s frustrating to try and get into Canvas because it takes so long to load,” Madame Roznos said.
Teachers don’t just have to deal with the stress, they also have to account for this long load time which often means taking away time from their lesson. Madame Roznos has this problem in her classes.
“I have my students take their tests on a Chromebook and I know ahead of time that it’s going to take a while to log on,” Madame Roznos said. “I tell my students to start logging on to the Chromebooks as soon as they get here, and then I give them three or four minutes to study.”
Teachers have to rearrange their schedules in accordance with the issue even if it is just small tweaks to their schedules it can get annoying. Better connections would help students lower stress levels and maybe even have fewer late assignments.
“Having a better connection would help me get assignments in faster and it would help lower my stress levels because I won’t be worrying as much about turning assignments in,” Hart said.
