As the Youth in Government (YIG) club begins its year, over 40 students are involved in the program. This large number raises questions over whether all YIG members will be able to attend the annual Jefferson City convention.
“This year, members will be required to attend mandatory meetings in order to go to the convention,” Mrs. Margo Hoffman, YIG’s sponsor, said.
According to Mrs. Hoffman, goals made for this year include thinking up bill ideas to be passed into laws, to be perfect with parliamentary procedure, and to win lots of awards at the convention.
“We want to keep the media and legislative branch in tip-top shape to win lots of awards,” said Mrs. Hoffman.
This year, Mrs. Hoffman has a second teacher helping her with the club: Mrs. Lauren Breite.
“Mrs. Breite will be watching and learning all about YIG this year,” said Mrs. Hoffman.
Mrs. Breite and Mrs. Hoffman will be preparing the students during the coming months for the Jefferson City Convention, the club’s culminating event, where they will compete against other schools’ YIG members. The next YIG meeting will be held on Tuesday afternoon in Mrs. Hoffman’s room.
