Hockey ties it up
Club earns 5-5 tie, breaking its losing streak
The Francis Howell Central Hockey team tied against Fort Zumwalt East 5-5 on Monday, November 28th; the team has not won a game yet this season. For freshman Grant Curtis the team’s lack of turnovers on the puck is the key of the five goals this game.
“We shot the puck more because we usually don’t get the puck off very much. We try to go through the players on the blue line and we turn over usually and that’s why we lost seven games in a row. We shot more and that’s why we got five goals,” Curtis said.
The team went into this game determined and more serious than other games so they could gain confidence going into future games. The first period that confidence they needed succeeded in a 2-0 lead.
However, the beginning of second period FZE came back and scored three goals making the score 2-3. According to Curtis, this game was a back and forth game.
“We were up two nothing the first and then they scored three goals right off the second period. We’d score then they’d score,” Curtis said.
For freshman Brendan Westcott, the scoreboard is something to be happy about because their opponents were a good match.
“We expected the team we were facing to be pretty good, and they were a pretty solid team. I feel like we all played really well, we played strong throughout the whole game,” Westcott said.
According to Westcott, one disadvantage of the game was trying to keep civil with the other players.
“It was getting a little heated on the ice, there were a couple fights. We were trying to keep ourselves cool and keep the game simple,” Westcott said.
Once the team works on their defense and stays out of the penalty box there will be more wins, according to sophomore Fletcher Zieman.
“Most teams play the puck pretty well. They pass a lot in our zone. They kept it in and also we were in the box for stupid reasons. That’s one of our team’s biggest downfalls, we get a lot of penalties,” said Zieman.
The hockey team will play again on December 2nd at Lindenwood Ice Arena against Holt.
