Boys swim team finishes strong

With the season coming to a close many swimmers reflect on their triumphs as a team.

The past weeks for the boys swim team at FHC have been a busy one with the team both at GAC’s and at state. GAC’s alone were about ten hours spread over three days and added pressure to swimmers like Adam Decker, a sophomore, who said,

“GAC’s are different from a regular meet because there are a lot more teams and competition… I felt more [pressure] because there’s more to compete against. Like any meet you want to win- but even more.”

However, dealing with pressure is nothing new to sophomore Alex Anderson who broke his personal record in both the 50 meter freestyle and 100 meter freestyle event as well as getting a qualifying time for state in four separate events. However, according to Anderson, his favorite part of the season wasn’t just getting to take the day off school in order to go to state and be recognized for his “hundreds of hours of work”, instead,

“What I’m going to miss most are the pasta parties and all the fun at practices and meets,” Anderson said, however, “I’m looking forward to getting back at it next year and accomplishing new goals. I’m going to do more pre- season workouts so I can be even more ready for next season. ”

While senior Cameron Zalmanoff isn’t going to be back next year knows that he will always cherish his memories of the team,

“I don’t regret anything,” said Zalmanoff, “It was all great”. Zalmanoff then goes on to explain that this year’s team was particularly special to him,

“This year our team was one of the best we’ve had in years. We even had a hand full of guys qualify for state…the best event overall was the 400 meter freestyle relay. They went to state and dropped a lot of time.”

The boys’ swim team has definitely improved since this time last year. Last year only one spartan swimmer qualified for state whereas this year two individuals and two relay teams qualified. In addition, the team broke a school record for the 200 meter freestyle relay, beat school rival Francis Howell, and beat the teams rival Chaminade. Just based on this year’s successful season hopes are running high that next year the swimmers will continue their winning streak.
