The boys soccer season is coming to a close as the team plays its final regular season games in the next two weeks. Last Thursday, the team played the St. Charles West Warriors, who has a record 15-4 in their season with several mercy rule victories under their belt. The Spartans came out strong against the Warriors, maintaining possession and shutting down two of the top scorers in the area, pulling out a 3-0 win.

Then on Saturday the team fell to Marquette 7-0. Marquette is regarded as one of the top teams in the area and is currently number one in state. While possession wasn’t an issue, it was the little mistakes that ended up costing them the game.

“They capitalized on every mistake we made,” said junior Jordan Henderson.

This Wednesday the team played Fort Zumwalt West in a game that would help determine their seeding at districts. West started off fast, scoring within the first 15 seconds. The Spartans eventually gained momentum scoring before the end of first half, but lost it when West scored early on in the 2nd.

“This motivated us to do better,” Henderson said.

The Spartans soon answered with a goal, and for the a large portion of the rest of the game the team worked on defending against West and scoring another goal, however West managed to score off a cross to an open man. The Spartans end up falling 3-2 to West, unable to score in the last part of the half.

“We tried to score desperately but we had too many mistakes to get a tying goal,” said junior Walter Lembeck.

West will be the last team they play in their district, with this loss sealing the team at fifth seed. The team’s last games will be against Rock Bridge, Hickman, Vianney, and Oakville, all top schools in their state.
