GAC tournament loss leaves girls tennis in defeat
Excitement and nerves dominated the courts as the girls tennis team battled against Howell, Fort Zumwalt North, West, East and Timberland. The team played their GAC tournament on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 during school. GAC’s is the last tournament for most players who are not on varsity. Since the season is ending for most, the girls were determined and had high hopes of success. Instead of feeling triumphant, they were left with disappointment.
Junior Tanya Bhandary, who placed fourth with junior Samantha Nardi in number five doubles match, feels that they started out great, but that they could’ve done better.
“We did great our first few matches, and the score was 7-3, but then everything went downhill and we lost 7-8,” said Bhandary.
Junior Elise Thomas, who took fourth place in the number six singles match, was also disappointed and believed that the team didn’t play their best.
“Our score was 1-8 against Howell; that was the worst score that it’s ever been, and we lost to a team that we had destroyed earlier in the season,” said Thomas. “The loss really brought us down, but we played alright but not our best.”
Although the team was upset over the loss, this season still ended in victory. The team has grown immensely since the beginning of the season, and the girls are extremely proud.
“We’ve improved in so many ways! All of us have played to our best abilities and it has shown throughout the season,” said Thomas. “I also see how the team has bonded and how that has helped our team be successful.”
The varsity team will finish the tennis season after their many tournaments until Oct. 26. The team hopes for victory as they wrap up the season and show off their hard work and talent.
