Swim team takes 2nd in GACs

The boys swim team took a close second to Fort Zumwalt West this week in GACs. After swimming and diving Tuesday and Thursday, the Spartans finished Conference with 346 points, 11 points behind the Jaguars.

“We came in a very close second to Zumwalt West, but everyone had outstanding swims,” Coach Andrew Morgan said. “I told them it was going to be a close meet, and they all stepped up and did everything they could. West had great swims too, and their guys were dropping time and moving up in places too. They just outnumbered us in each event.”

Both the 200-yard medley relay — made up of freshman Zach Rogers, juniors Andrew Smith and Ryan Macy, and senior Jeremy Cabu — and 400-yard freestyle relay — made up of Rogers, Macy, Cabu and freshman Derek Mielke — took first in the meet and broke their own school records they set earlier this year. Rogers also took first in the 200-yard freestyle and second in the 100-yard freestyle. Freshman Jeff Connor took second in the 500-yard freestyle, as did freshman Brendan Brause in the 1 Meter Diving. Smith placed third and qualified for state with his time in the 200 IM. Freshman Eric Macy also qualified in the 1 Meter Diving.

“It was a really exciting meet overall, and I couldn’t be more proud of how everyone performed all year,” Coach Morgan said. “This has been a really great team. They are all so close and do a great job keeping each other motivated and psyched up for their races.”

The team will have six individual qualifiers, including two freshmen divers, and two relays competing at State next weekend, Nov. 12 and 13 at the Rec Plex.
