Whether it’s students who play sports or those who don’t, we all have times where we have gone injured, known a loved one who has been injured. Knowing a way to be flexible and aid one another by being educated in the healing process is crucial to be educated and aware of. On Wednesday Jan.14th during seminar in the Learning Commons,FHC was holding a Real World Wednesday for physical therapist Amanda Stapleton-Cloud, she came in and talked to students who signed up for the event, educating them on how Stapleton’s day to day looks for her as an orthopedic physician, how she works with inpatient and outpatient students at Barnes Jewish Hospital, and works a different range of a variety of ages. Moreover, students who have attended this can be able to put this in perspective in their lives walking out the library knowing how to help a peer or guardian if ever there was a situation whereas someone needed help. Nonetheless this was an opportunity as well for student athletes to be able to understand their body more and learn what are exercises that help strain or tenses muscles or any exercise that assist injuries in order to be able to bounce back into the sports many athletes are passionate about whether it’s the field, court or mats.
Sophomore Regina Gil-Farias has been in wrestling for the past 2 years, she navigates through the sport learning different moves and techniques. It’s beneficial for Gil-Farias to understand stretches, or exercises that might help her in order to get better with her growth. Also, if there is pain throughout her body in a particular place she can be able to understand the body and how to solve the issue, a key asset in this is one of her coaches Bruno Rossy— one of the wrestling coaches— as he is also a physical therapist, which plays a role in her sport as-well how it piqued her interest in physical therapy coming to the real world Wednesday.Â
“I play sports so I think it’s interesting and good to know what goes on in the body and how I can help people if their injured and or myself,” said Gil-Farias
There is one real world Wednesday being held each month as the next one will be held in February, yet to be decided on the guest speaker and the topic.Â
