There are many aspects that make up Francis Howell Central, one of which is the art department. Organized by the National Art Honors Society, the Fine Arts Festival is an annual event that took place on March 13. The theme of the festival changes each year; this year’s theme, “Creativity Blooms,” led to decorations consisting mostly of floral designs. The event showcases students’ artwork to the public and provides them with the opportunity to sell their pieces.
A wide variety of art is displayed, including drawings, paintings, ceramics, and digital work. Much of the planning and organization behind the event is led by NAHS. Senior Olivia Dalton has been a member of the club since her sophomore year and now serves as its president. The festival has been planned and discussed since Dalton took on her position at the beginning of the school year. Almost all the work for the event is taken on by NAHS; in fact, they print their own t-shirts for the festival. On the day of the event, club members began setting up immediately after school, bringing tables, display boards, chairs, and the activity materials to the cafe. Activities included painting ceramic flowers, face painting, a doodle booth, and a button making station. These activities were enjoyable not only for the children but also engaging for the adults. Dalton explains why she believes art can help to build a community.
“Art builds a community by giving you the opportunity to look at two peoples’ paintings, who made the same thing,” Dalton said. “They’re totally different, but you can use those differences to connect with each other.”
The National Art Honors Society will hold its next meeting on March 30 to debrief the event.
