The culinary arts have great importance to all students. It goes without saying that everyone should be able to cook for themselves in order to be self-sufficient; however, cooking techniques and recipes aren’t the only things students learn through taking culinary classes. The communication aspect of these courses holds the same importance, if not more so, than the cooking itself.
Communication is required in the real world, so the FACS department puts emphasis on those skills through its coursework. In the culinary arts class, students work in groups of three to five people, so students learn how to work through disagreements, just like they would in a workplace.
Even though working with other students can be difficult, students need to learn how to work with difficult people for their future, as well as learn to support themselves in the kitchen to save money and create better-tasting and healthier food for themselves and others.
