In their first game of the season, the varsity boys basketball team fell to Seckman High School 65-56 on the first day of the Hillsboro tournament. FHC was seeded second in the tournament prior to the game, and the the team had their sights set on starting off the season right.
The Spartans struggled early, failing to score more than 15 points in each of the first two quarters. At halftime, Seckman had amassed a 40-17 lead. The Spartans were able to outscore Seckman in the third quarter 19-11, but by the start of the fourth, Seckman was ahead 51-36. By the end of the game, the Spartans were stunned.
Senior Derrick Puni was quite disappointed the team lost last night, and believes that the team has plenty of talent to succeed at the varsity level.
“We had a little trouble rebounding and playing defense but it was our first game of the season so we were a little shaky but we’ll be alright,” Puni said.
The team has two games within a five-day stretch, so Puni believes they have big practices ahead.
“We look to improve on our defense and playing as a team,” Puni said. The team’s next game is Dec. 5th against Windsor in second day of the Hillsboro tournament, and they have a game on Saturday as well.
