After an average start to the season in 2012, the boys basketball team started off 2013 with a bang, beating Timberland in a hard fought game 51-50. The Wolves surged at the end of the game, going on a 22-0 run, but the Spartans were still able to hold off their opponent and gain the victory. Senior forward Derrick Puni led the team with 18 points, followed by senior guard Ryan Howard with 15 points. The win improved the Spartans record to 4-6 on the season, and dropped Timberland to 5-7.

“It felt good beating them because they are one of our rivals,” junior guard Trey Curry explained. “What was disappointing however was that we didn’t blow them out, which we should have.”

Curry said the reason the team pulled off the victory despite a late Wolves surge was because of the fact the team kept its composure and fought to the finish.

Junior Jordan Scott said that coming into the new year, the team had a very key goal on their mind.

“Basically, the goal we have this year is to win the Washington Tournament,” Scott said. Scott and Curry both agree that they should’ve blown out Timberland, but to them, a win is a win, and that’s what matters in the end.
