The sixth seeded Spartans boys basketball team pulled off an upset over third seeded Bayless and took third place in the Washington tournament, winning 65-49. The Spartans (6-9) took a 27-18 lead at the half, and never lost the lead all game. Bayless (9-5) was stunned and only made half the shots attempted. The Spartans, meanwhile, made 62% of their shots taken.

Junior Jordan Scott had a goal planned for this year, and while they didn’t place first, they didn’t come home empty handed.

“Our main goal for the new year was to win the Washington Tournament,” Scott said. As the sixth seed, the odds were against the Spartans, and after their disappointing loss to Westminster 83-59 one day prior, the chances of winning looked bleak. That didn’t phase them one bit, and they fought hard to victory over a team ranked three spots higher. The Spartans also played well on defense, blocking six shots and garnering ten steals.

Last night, the Spartans fell to Troy 65-49, dropping their record to 6-10 on the season. Senior forward Derrick Puni led the team with 18 points in the game.

For the Spartans, it’s crunch time. If they want a shot in the playoffs, they need to make back to .500, and then focus on attaining a winning record to close out the season.
