Playing with the big dogs
The past week has been a very busy one for the girls golf team; with four matches and an all day tournament, the team has begun to get a sense of the competition they will be facing as the season progresses. On Tuesday, the team faced off against Fort Zumwalt North, winning with a score of 179 to 193, with junior MacKenzie McDowell earning a medal again for her second consecutive meet.
“If I keep up these performances, I’m confident that I can make it to state this year,” McDowell said.
Two days later, the team took part in their first tournament, where they had the chance to play against some of the premier girls golf teams in the area, such as Saint Josephs and Lafayette, both of which placed in the state tournament last year. The golfers commented on the difficulty of the course and how competitive the tournament was. Overall, it was a rough tournament for the team with scores that were higher than normal.
“We could’ve done better, our short game wasn’t the best and we just didn’t shoot our best that day,” said junior Allie McCoy.
McCoy, who has been on the team since her freshman year, has been steadily improving each year and will be a key contributor in the team’s success this year, according to the team’s coach, Mr. John Miller.
The next day, the team faced off against Francis Howell North at the elegant Bogey Hills country club, which is also known for its difficult golf course. The team pulled out a 208 to 216 victory with McDowell medaling yet again, but this time sharing the title of medalist with freshman Emma Wolf. Wolf was noticed early on by Coach Miller as one of the three rising freshman, along with Brooke Killian and Hannah Lager.
“All three are talented enough to play on the varsity team this year,” Miller said.
And Wolf has certainly lived up to his word. Rising up to the number two player on the team, Wolf is now playing on the same level of some veteran players, and has huge potential as the season goes on.
