The Spartan varsity wrestling team is continuing its winning ways this season. The wrestlers have carried their undefeated regular season record last year on into this year, starting the regular season 2-0. Led by seniors Brandon Wilbourn and Andrew Buffa and junior Terrell Wilbourn, the Spartans defeated Seckman High School in a close match by a score of 36-35. Picking up wins by pin for the Spartans were Buffa, Brandon, junior Justin Dickey and freshmen John Wood.
The following match was against arch-rival Howell. The Spartans prevailed with a 41-26 victory. According to Brandon, the team was very excited to win the first two matches of the season, but feel that they need much improvement to stay up to par with Francis Howell Central wrestling from past years.
“We are excited to start the way we have, but we are only winning by a few points and we are used to blowing teams out,” said Brandon. “We need to continue to grow as a team, or we might not be as successful as in years past.”
As the team heads into its third regular season match, Jan. 6 against St. Charles West, they look to continue to better themselves as a team and eventually get back to the state tournament.
