Spartans in second moving into wrestling day two

Sophomore John Wood and seniors Ben Henson, Terrel Wilbourn, Justin Dickey, Andy King, Matt Greene, Wyatt Miller and Brian Paur will all be competing towards a state championship in their respective weight brackets today. Junior Cole Anderson and senior Luke Knoche lost their first matches but have both advanced in the side-bracket towards a third place finish in their weight classes.

Head Coach Steve Cross is pleased with the team’s performance so far.

“So far, it’s been pretty good,” said Coach Cross. “ We had a couple tough losses, but our wrestlers are playing well.”

The coach is also pleased with individual performances but is not giving much attention to the nature of the win.

“It’s all about the win at this stage,” said Coach Cross. “So I’m happy with all of [the wrestlers].”

The team is currently trailing first place Blue Springs High School by 3.5 points going into the second day of the tournament. Today will feature quarterfinal and semifinal matches as well as matches in the side bracket. The finals are scheduled to take place tomorrow.
