The Lady Spartans basketball team played the Fort Zummwalt South Bulldogs on Feb. 24 in the district championship and lost 34-29, ending the Lady Spartans’ season.

“We didn’t get to the line in order to shoot very often,” said Coach Brian Ricker. “Despite that, we played a good defense and held [the Bulldogs] at 34 points.”

Although the game was lost, senior guard Madeline Ragsdale contributed two three-pointers and sophomore guard Kristen Warncke one three-pointer to the Lady Spartans’ effort.

The Bulldogs gained several free throw points because of the fouls called against the Lady Spartans. The total fouls against the Spartans was 13, while the Bulldogs received four.

“We didn’t think it was fair, but there wasn’t anything we could do but play through it,” said junior guard Sharese Jones.

Coach Ricker says Jones, on average, scores about 15 points per game, but she was only able to make four due to the defense of the Bulldogs in the district match-up.

“The simple fact is that we couldn’t hit the easy two pointers because of [the Bulldogs’] defense, and we had a bunch of turnovers toward the end,” said Jones

This game was the last game of the year for the Lady Spartans. The seniors, forward Stacey Belt, forward Alison Berck and Ragsdale had an emotional night, with it being their last high school basketball game.

“I am happy with the way the season went,” said Ragsdale. “We had 20 wins, and that doesn’t happen very often.”
