Being dumped with icy, cold water is not always what comes to mind when thinking of improving as a team; however, for the girls golf team, ALS the ice bucket challenge gave the golfers a chance to have a better understanding of one another.

Due to an ALS ice bucket challenge nomination from fellow competitor team, Francis Howell, the team set up a quick get together in order to follow through with its nomination. According to junior Mary Halloran, the challenge ended up being an opportunity to have a team dinner and get to know the new players, since there were so many new golfers to the team.

“Team dinners is a brand new thing and the most fun we’ve had ever. We decided to do [the ice bucket challenge] at the team dinner, and it was great to get to know everybody and eat junk food,” Halloran said.

The team dinner took place at senior Abigail Kaplan’s house and was an opportunity to unwind before the slew of matches the team faced this past week.

One of which was the Rockwood Summit Invitational, a tournament on Tuesday. Though the team did not win, some players such as sophomore Emma Wolf and senior Mackenzie McDowell scored well. Wolf shot an 85, placing 16th place, while McDowell shot an 88. One of the struggles with the specific tournament was the fact that this was the first full round of 18 holes that some of the players had ever played, according to Wolf.

“Some of the other girls struggled with the course and were in the 100s,” Wolf said.

Even with some of the girls being brand new to the sport, the upperclassmen have had some benefit, according to Halloran.

“Upperclassmen helping underclassmen, who are brand new, helped us drastically because we learn through teaching,” Halloran said.

The next match for the girls golf team will be today against Francis Howell North at St. Peter’s Golf Headquarters.
