Chasing down new personal records

After an exhausting 5000 meter run, the boys varsity cross country team had senior PJ Brown, as well as juniors Walter Lembeck and Zach McKinley, representing Francis Howell Central. The meet was, according to McKinley, a smashing success.

“Most of the runners broke their [personal record],” McKinley said. “The weather was perfect, and a lot of the runners got new PRs.”

McKinley was one of the lucky runners who achieved a new best time, clocking in at a hard earned 18:01.

“I remember that it was 18:01, because I was really hoping to make it into the 17’s,” smiled McKinley.

Walter Lembeck not only broke new ground for himself but for the whole cross country team. Achieving a 16:58 5K at Forest Park marked the cross country team’s first sub-17:00 time this season.

“Brown and McKinley push me when we practice,” explained Lembeck. “They always push me to do better.”

Perhaps most impressive is that seven of the boys cross country team’s strongest runners are currently injured. Despite the loss in manpower, the remaining runners have been working hard and have been seeing positive results.

“I’m very proud of [the team] for picking up the slack with so many runners out with injuries,” explained McKinley.
