Large crowds of people can often times be overwhelming to athletes, giving increased performance anxiety, a higher stressed mindset, and potentially lead to more mistakes during games. The boys varsity basketball team had a game which was held on Jan. 6, beginning at 7 pm in the FHC main gym against Fort Zumwalt West. The teams encourage spectators to come watch, especially by adding in clothing themes to keep them interested and excited. Varsity athletes deal with these crowds nearly every competition, and can understand the impact the people have on the teams who are playing whether good or bad. However, junior Jamarious Britt explains how an audience can actually improve how he plays in games.
“I definitely feed off their energy most of the time, especially when [I’m] tired and there’s a crowd behind [me], it gives me a [boost] of enthusiasm,” Britt said. “We [often] rely on each other and [communicate] so we can be on the same page for plays.”Â
The upcoming varsity basketball game will be a tournament against multiple schools at Washington High School on Jan. 14, this will be the 2nd day of their competition.Â
