Paying tribute to former student and Spartan boys volleyball athlete Alex Carlos, the boys varsity volleyball team honored his legacy during the game against Howell on April 21.
Carlos passed away in December of 2024, and since then, his family and friends have worked to create a fundraiser to raise money for scholarships and to fund ongoing events in his name. During the game, a donation box near the concession stand had already collected over $100 before the second half. The Spartans stayed determined and mindful during the game for Carlos, to such an extent that they won against Howell 3-1. Taking part in the game, junior Josh Hadden contributed to the majority of the points gained. Hadden has been playing volleyball for about six years and has gained a lot of experience from the sport. Before each game, he works to complete his warm-ups and eats before to avoid being in a bad mood. Hadden felt extremely happy to win the set considering the fundraiser and losing the first half. Hadden explains why he thinks the fundraiser for Alex Carlos is important.
“I think it’s an important fundraiser, especially to show that with volleyball and a lot of sports it’s not end-all, be-all,” Hadden said. “At the end of the day, it’s just a game, it’s for fun and I feel like with the fundraiser and being able to get that many people there to receive all that support for such a cause was very important towards our program and what we stand for.”
The boys varsity volleyball team will have its next match against Liberty on April 30.
