Boys win, lose against two key rivals

The boys volleyball team opened its season against DeSmet March 29, losing in two games, 25-19 and 25-23, respectively.

“I think we were a little cocky going in; we thought we were a little better than we are,” Coach Mark McAfee said.

Coach McAfee also said it may have been first-match jitters that got to the team. While this was the team’s first match-up, DeSmet already had a couple games under its belt.

“We didn’t play very well, but we’re never going to use excuses,” Coach McAfee said.

March 30 the team took on its sister school rival at Howell, which the boys won in two games.

Coach McAfee said this was a key win for the team, as it counts toward the conference title and was a rival victory for the team.

Saturday, the team will compete in the Marquette Tournament against Marquette, Lafayette, Mehlville, SLUH and CBC.

“We could conceivably lose every game; it’s going to be that big of a tournament.”
