Kicking off the wall

Swim season begins with two wins and one loss in the team’s first two meets.

The girls swim team has completed its first two meets of the season, picking up two wins and one loss along the way. On Dec. 11, the girls swam in a tri-meet against Fort Zumwalt West and Liberty. While Liberty had only six swimmers competing, Fort Zumwalt West provided tougher competition for the team.

“West is always a tough competition; they’ve got a really strong team,” Coach Jessica Graslie said. “Our team scored more points against them this year than last year, so that was good.”

The team finished with a win against Liberty and a loss against West in the tri-meet. Because there were three teams swimming in this meet, not all swimmers were able to compete.

“We had a strong performance for the first meet of the season, especially since it wasn’t even our whole team competing,” senior Hayley Lechner, a team captain, said.

On Dec. 18, the swim team beat Francis Howell North by 49 points, finishing 111-62. In this second meet, every swimmer was able to swim at least two events.

“We had a lot of first place finishes,” Coach Graslie said. “The girls pushed through and cheered each other on.”

The team and coaches have plans to improve times and scores this season by working on specific details.

“We’ll look at the girls’ splits in the relays and move some things around to try and get the best relays put together for the season. Each girl can also see their individual splits and focus on things to help them drop more time,” Coach Graslie said.

The girls will compete in the Fort Zumwalt North Relays meet today at 3:30 p.m., where they will swim against multiple teams.
