On Tuesday, the girls swim team honored its six seniors. The Senior Night celebration took place halfway through the team’s meet against Duchesne High School, who they beat 101-83.

“We got to celebrate and look back on our time on the team,” senior Hayley Lechner said. “It’s fun to be looked up to by the other girls.”

The meet began with senior Holly Ryan winning the diving competition by a narrow margin of .2 points. This is Ryan’s first year on the team, although she wishes she had joined earlier.

“I didn’t think I would win,” Ryan said. “I was relieved, because .2 is very small.”

During the meet, four seniors participated in two all-senior relays. According to Lechner, the girls had to branch out and swim different strokes than usual in order to create the relays.

“We’ve never swam in a relay together before, but it went well,” senior Kristy Carroll said.

In addition to Ryan, the team’s only senior diver, and captains Carroll, Lechner and Madi Wagner, seniors Madelyn Newton and Amanda Payne were honored. In the Senior Night ceremony commemorating the six swimmers, the girls walked with their parents as their future plans and past memories were read. After receiving a medal from Activities Director Scott Harris, they walked through a tunnel of bubbles that the rest of the team formed. It is an important night for the seniors and their families.

“This was the first meet that my dad has been to my whole swim career,” Carroll said.

Throughout their time on the team, the swimmers have learned lessons they they were able to share on Tuesday night.

“I’ve learned that pushing myself in practice will make me better,” Wagner said. “I try to set higher goals for myself every year.”

The team will compete next against St. Charles West High School on Feb. 3.
