Rolling out the mats and kicking off the season, the boys wrestling team competed in its first duel against Francis Howell North on Dec. 10. As the wrestlers were announced for their matches, the lights were turned off and the gym faded to black. Then spotlights focused onto the wrestlers as they made their entrances. The Spartans made an impactful start to the season winning 50-20, exhibiting their determination early on. Junior Braden Roussin has been wrestling for about five years and continues to display his skills on the mat. Roussin’s goal for this season is to continue making weight, and he hopes to see his teammate, junior Sam Golden win state. Roussin also spoke on the struggles that come along with wrestling.
“The hardest part about wrestling physically, staying on weight and eating what I need to eat”, Roussin said. “Mentally, it would be going to practice everyday, even when you don’t want too.”
Boys varsity wrestling will meet Dec. 19 and 20 in Kansas City for a wrestling stampede.
