As the end of the school year is approaching, students in Mr. Patrick Reed’s anatomy class begin their cat dissections. On May 8, Mr. Reed’s third hour class conducted the dissection in their lab groups. Since the dissection is the students’ final exam, it allows them to demonstrate the knowledge they have obtained throughout the year and gain hands-on experience. Although the process of the dissection can be generally unpleasant, junior Elizabeth Nix enjoyed the unique opportunity and gained new insights.
“I learned that I’m not as scared of dissecting animals as I thought I would be. You have to compartmentalize and see this is not like the cat you have at home; this is just a straight study. You have to separate those two lives and I feel like that was easy for me to realize, and that was something that helped,” said Nix.
“Honestly, it was just something you never really get to do. Knowing that you’re in control of all that, it was really cool.”
Reed’s class will continue to work on their dissections as the finals season approaches.
