With the new year coming into focus, NHS members are coming out swinging with a number of service projects and other volunteer opportunities planned for the start of the upcoming semester, most notably the recent Special Olympics and The Cinderella Project.

“We have a lot planned for this semester. Last Saturday, NHS members had the amazing opportunity to help out with the Special Olympics. We are also trying to coordinate something with The Metro St. Louis Cinderella Project,” said NHS sponsor Ms. Laurie Fay.

On Jan. 18, nearly 200 local athletes flooded the gymnasium at FHC for the first Special Olympics hosted by StuCo. Fortunately, StuCo invited NHS members to join in the fun and help fulfill the Special Olympics organization’s goal to provide year round sports training and competition for children and adults with disabilities.

“Whether they were a parent or athlete, everyone was having a blast at the Olympics. It was like a carnival full of fun games and sports for everyone to play. It felt great to help out with such a fun event,” said senior NHS member Shashank Nedungadi.

NHS members will also be able to help out with The Cinderella Project. The Cinderella Project is an umbrella term encompassing many nationwide organizations which aim to provide prom dresses to high school girls who can’t afford them. The Metro St. Louis Cinderella Project focuses specifically on the high school girls of St. Louis.

“NHS members will be helping out with the drive and donations aspect of The Cinderella Project in St. Louis. To acquire the many dresses necessary to supply the St. Louis area, The Cinderella Project is majorly dependent on donations from the community. I’m excited that NHS has the opportunity to work with The Cinderella Project. It’s a great way to give back to the the community and make sure that every girl’s prom night is perfect,” said NHS President Taylor Stone.

The dawn of the new year and new semester at FHC is looking very bright for NHS members. With the great energy and momentum right out of the gate, FHC and its surrounding community has a lot to look forward to from NHS in the near and distant future.
