Boys Tennis takes on rain cancellations

After weeks of practices and warmups, the boys varsity tennis team finally played their first official match on Friday March 28th where they lost 1-8 against DeSmet. They had one match scheduled for earlier in the week against St. Charles West, but it was canceled due to the weather. For a sport like tennis, weather cancellations cause a problem for their playing. For their match for Monday March 31st, they were defeated by Fort Zumwalt East 7-2.

“Rain cancellations definitely have a negative effect, because we don’t get the hits that we obviously need to get ready for matches,” said varsity tennis player senior Nick

Vadalabene.

Also as the season progresses it will become harder for activities to be rescheduled as it is the last quarter of the school year. Play time is much desired for seniors like Vadalabene, seeing this is their last season playing for the school.

“Play time is really important, it’s kind of almost like our legacy is what we are leaving behind in the school,” Vadalabene said.

For the team, they are looking forward to getting into the season. There is not only competition for other schools, but also amongst the team. Some of competition lies between senior Casey Nielsen and junior Allen Yu, both fighting for the first spot on the varsity team. Nielsen joked,

“Allen can’t beat Chris [Wieland] and I,” Nielsen said, “He is a really good tennis player though.”

The competition will continue throughout the season, as they will be playing one another during the practice matches held during their practices to keep them on their game for their real matches. They will play their next match Wednesday April 2nd when they take on Timberland.
